Frequently Asked Questions

How does photo matching work?

TrackTag matches photos to GPS coordinates based on timestamps:

  1. Import a GPX track (or connect to Strava to download activity data)
  2. Select photos from your library
  3. TrackTag reads each photo's EXIF timestamp
  4. For each photo, TrackTag finds the nearest GPS point on your track at that exact time
  5. Location data is written back to your photo's metadata

Why aren't my photos matching?

Common reasons photos don't match:

How do I check if my photos have timestamps?

On Mac:

  1. Select a photo in Finder
  2. Press Cmd + I to open Info
  3. Look for "Created" date under "More Info"

On iOS:

  1. Open Photos app
  2. Select a photo
  3. Swipe up to see metadata
  4. Check for date/time information

What GPX file formats are supported?

TrackTag supports standard GPX 1.0 and GPX 1.1 files. Most GPS devices and apps (Garmin, Wahoo, Komoot, etc.) export compatible files.

Can I use multiple GPX files for one batch of photos?

Currently, TrackTag processes one track at a time. If you have photos from a multi-day trip, you'll need to match them separately against each day's GPX file. Batch processing is planned for a future update.

Does TrackTag modify my original photos?

TrackTag only updates the metadata (EXIF location fields) in your Photos library. The actual image pixels are not modified. Location data can be removed later using standard photo editing tools if needed.
