System Requirements
- iOS: Requires iOS 17.0 or later
- macOS: Requires macOS 14.0 or later
- Photos: Must have EXIF timestamp data
- GPX files: Standard GPX 1.0 or 1.1 format
Frequently Asked Questions
How does photo matching work?
TrackTag matches photos to GPS coordinates based on timestamps:
- Import a GPX track (or connect to Strava to download activity data)
- Select photos from your library
- TrackTag reads each photo's EXIF timestamp
- For each photo, TrackTag finds the nearest GPS point on your track at that exact time
- Location data is written back to your photo's metadata
Why aren't my photos matching?
Common reasons photos don't match:
- No timestamp: Photos must have EXIF timestamp data (most modern cameras and phones include this)
- Time mismatch: Photo timestamps must fall within the GPX track's time range
- Timezone issues: Ensure your camera/phone time was set correctly when photos were taken
- Clock drift: If your camera clock was wrong, manually adjust timestamps before importing
How do I check if my photos have timestamps?
On Mac:
- Select a photo in Finder
- Press Cmd + I to open Info
- Look for "Created" date under "More Info"
On iOS:
- Open Photos app
- Select a photo
- Swipe up to see metadata
- Check for date/time information
What GPX file formats are supported?
TrackTag supports standard GPX 1.0 and GPX 1.1 files. Most GPS devices and apps (Garmin, Wahoo, Komoot, etc.) export compatible files.
Can I use multiple GPX files for one batch of photos?
Currently, TrackTag processes one track at a time. If you have photos from a multi-day trip, you'll need to match them separately against each day's GPX file. Batch processing is planned for a future update.
Does TrackTag modify my original photos?
TrackTag only updates the metadata (EXIF location fields) in your Photos library. The actual image pixels are not modified. Location data can be removed later using standard photo editing tools if needed.
Strava Integration
How do I connect to Strava?
- In TrackTag, select "Strava" as your data source
- Tap "Connect to Strava"
- Log in to your Strava account (opens in browser)
- Authorize TrackTag to read your activities
- You'll be redirected back to TrackTag automatically
What Strava data does TrackTag access?
TrackTag requests read-only access to:
- Your activity list (name, date, type)
- GPS track data for activities
TrackTag cannot post activities, modify data, or access private information beyond activity GPS tracks.
How do I disconnect Strava?
To revoke TrackTag's access:
- Go to strava.com/settings/apps
- Find "TrackTag" in your authorized applications
- Click "Revoke Access"
Why don't I see all my Strava activities?
Possible reasons:
- Private activities: TrackTag can only access activities with GPS data marked as visible
- No GPS data: Indoor activities (treadmill, trainer) don't have GPS tracks
- Rate limits: Strava limits API requests; try again in a few minutes
Troubleshooting
TrackTag crashes on launch
Try these steps:
- Force quit the app
- Restart your device
- Ensure you're running the latest version of TrackTag
- Check for iOS/macOS system updates
- If issue persists, contact support
Photo library permissions not working
On iOS:
- Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos
- Find "TrackTag"
- Ensure it's set to "Full Access" or "Add Photos Only"
On macOS:
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos
- Enable access for TrackTag
Strava authentication fails
If OAuth login doesn't work:
- Ensure you have an active internet connection
- Check that you're logged in to Strava in Safari/default browser
- Try logging out of Strava and back in
- Clear Safari/browser cookies and try again
GPX file won't import
Ensure your file:
- Has a
.gpxextension - Is valid XML format (not corrupted)
- Contains track data (not just waypoints)
- Is under 50MB in size
Known Limitations
- Photos must have EXIF timestamps to be matched
- One GPX track per batch (multi-track support coming soon)
- Strava requires active internet connection for initial authentication
- Very large GPX files (100+ MB) may take longer to process
